 Parlor

Ho Ho HO
Our first Christmas tree in the house. We chose a 8ft Noble this year.  Rick and Jayden decorated it, now all it needs is for Santa to put gifts under it!

Kass made "soft shades" for the Parlor windows. They will help block the glare on the TV as well as keep some of the cold air out when they are hanging down.

Here you can see the Parlor set up with our TV (Jayden's Cartoon Life Support System) and DVD player.  So far it has been pretty comfortable in here watching television, but with all the arranging and moving of things to do, we haven't had much time for it yet. <G>

On 07-17-2008 Kass began arranging the furniure in her Parlor.  A little more base molding and this room will be done!

..........................................

On the weekend of July 5th we cleaned off the Parlor floor and put a coat of paint thinner on it to clean & prepare the wood.  On Sunday, we put down the first coat of Waterlox on the floor.  We estimate four coats total for the floor.  To the right the floor with just it's first coat on, below the second coat is on, and below right the third coat has been applied..

After many hours of sanding the floor is finally ready for vacuuming and touch ups.  Then it's on to a coat of paint thinner, then finally the waterlox!

June 22nd found us trying to get the floor in the Parlor sanded for refinishing.  Above left Kass works with the drum sander while above right Rick uses the orbital hand sander to do the edges where the machine doesn't reach.

almost complete

The kids had a party for Alexs graduation and moved a couple of couches into the Parlor.
We need to sand and finish the wood floors and then put up the rest of the base molding and this room will be complete. It is beginning to feel like "home".

On June 3rd we began putting flooring into the old house starting with the Parlor!
At the end of the day, we were just over half way done and running out of flooring!

Rick borrowed a planer from his dad, and as you can see it cleaned up the boards with linoleum and glue stuck to them very very well!

Left you can see the center fixture for the Parlor.  We only have one bulb in it but did test all the sockets. Below is a closer view of the wall sconces in the parlor by the pocket doors.

Kass picked up a trim color and tried it on this piece of picture rail, but she's not sure, says it looks too "Butterscotchy" (Is that a word?!?)
Here's a quick look at the wall fixtures Kass purchased on E-bay.  Rick & Fred put them up on February 28.

After the second coat was done we peeled off the dividing tape where the picture rail will go.  With Salmon on the walls and Avacado on the ceiling, Rick said he didn't think he could eat in this room!  Oddly enough the upper right picture was taken during the day and the other pictures in the evening.

On the weekend of October 27th, neighbors Rachel & Erin McCart came by to give us a hand with the house. Upper Left Rachel is putting on the first coat of 'Salmon' to the Parlor walls, as Upper Right, Jayden did his best to help out too.  Left Erin laughs as Kass threatens to take a roller to me if I don't start "gettin' my butt to work."  For the record, Erin & I built a wall and did other projects without further threats from the management.

On the weekend of October 20th, Kass finished taping & mudding the Parlor.  We had to bring in a heater to get the mud to dry since the rain & temperature dropping was not in our favor.  I think she wants to get this room done before the window people come on Thursday to impress them.  :)

On the weekend of October 10th, 2007, Rick cleaned out a lot of the stuff that had been dumped in the Parlor as we worked on all the other rooms in the house.  He had most of the floor cleaned off and all the insulation put up in the ceiling, and a little in the walls as well. Once we put up the sheet rock in here we can start the flooring in here and the Living Room!

Fan club? Solid
wired

Here you can see much of the work we have done since last fall!  Upper left, the ceiling fan box is in place.  Above, we've wired in outlets, and you can see the repaired wall with the siding completed from top to bottom.

Left, you can see much of the wiring that had to be run from 2nd floor down into the basement and back up into the Entryway for the threeway light switch to turn the light in the stairwell on and off.

Ready for
                improvements!

On the weekend of 9-10-2006 we removed the last of the lathe & plaster we wanted out of the rooms to make way for the new wiring & insulation.  Once we've cleared out the rest of the lumber from here and the Living Room, we can install the flooring we recovered from the coast!

On Saturday, July 22nd, 2006, we journeyed out to Brian & Deb McDonald's Rockaway beach house, where we helped them remove the original wood flooring they needed to take out, and we needed for our Living Room and Parlor!  It took us a total of about eight and a half hours, but we took it out and loaded into Rick's mom's pickup (see below).
Out with the
old...to go back in to the old!
Easy on the speed
bumps! We also managed to kill about nine sawzall blades, and most of the muscles in all four of our bodies!  Above Rick & Deb begin tackling the last half of the living room of the Beach House.  Our cordless Sawzall batteries couldn't keep up fast enough so we used their Rigid Sawzall.  We estimate we recovered about 600 square feet of flooring.  We believe this will replace all the Living Room and Parlor flooring.

Peek A Boo!
In a subfloor board in one of their bedrooms, we found this ad from a 1950 newspaper peeking at us!

Niiiiiiice. All Better
                Now
Here is the all new sub floor for the Parlor.  We were able to save some of the sub floor, and the original flooring was salvaged for use in the upstairs bedrooms.  It's very nice to be able to walk through here again. :) Here is the same wall seen below after removing the lathe & plaster from the walls & ceiling above, jacking up the corner, replacing the supports, floor joists, sub floor and 2x4 studs.

Damage
                in the corner of Parlor
Here is a view of the french doors into the Entryway from a window outside the Parlor.  We removed them so while we work on the house they wont get damaged.  We will restore them, possibly to a wood stain rather than painted.
This was the Parlor as we saw it on the first walk through.  It looked to be in good shape.  One window was missing glass & the paint was peeling off.  An exterior wall had water damage and the floor turned out to be damaged as well.

Parlor
                floor
Hardwood floors underneath the old linoleum.  Fairly solid except in the corner of the room by the Living Room.  We salvaged most of it and plan to re-use it in the bedrooms upstairs.  Since the flooring was totalled in the Living Room, we plan on replacing the flooring on the entire 1st floor except the Entryway & Den.
