early 1980's.

George Richard was known to have a temper, which caused Nora to
divorce him in 1913. He was thought to have traveled to the
mid-western states. It is known Nora lived at the house
until the 20's when she signed it over to John & Lula
Martin.
So far we have made contact with descendants of four of the Miller
children; George Earl, Clay, Ava Helen and Dickie. Dickie
was the last living child of Nora's, and she provided us with the
picture of the home while it was being built. She passed on
February 7th, 2006 at the age of 98. I regret we did not
make a trip to visit her before she passed, but rejoice in having
made contact with her, and gave her the knowledge her childhood
home would be restored and not lost to the elements.

George Richard Miller was
the son of Georg Adam Theodor Meuller and Johanna (Jane
or Janie) Dorothea Sittig. Other siblings included
brothers William F and Franklin E. A sister
named Bertha was born in the US in 1869. Left is a
photo of Jane & Georg and two of their daughters
(names unknown) who remained in Germany.
....................................................................................
George R Miller was born 2:00 am, September 7th, 1856,
the 6th child of Georg and Johanna. He was
christened on September 27th, 1856 with Georg Anschutz
listed as the Godparent at the Lutheran Church in
Schwarzbach, Germany, located roughly between Hinternah
and Hildbughausen. In America, Jane & George R
Americanized their names to Miller, while brothers
William F & Franklin E retained their German name.

Sterling A. Miller, son of George E. Miller wrote "My father kept
a small case where I found a scrapbook belonging to his mother,
Elonora Ellen Gard. There was an envelope from G.R. Miller
to Mrs. Nora Miller, postmarked April 8, 1938 from Washburn
Wisconsin. It was mailed to a court street address in Salem,
Oregon, and forwarded to 3004 NE 65th Street, Portland,
Oregon. I recall that Clay Miller lived in that neighborhood
about that time, and this could be his address. I have a
photograph of my father visiting the cemetery in Washburn,
Wisconsin, holding the
grave
stone of a G.R. Miller. The picture was taken in
1954."
George Earl Miller
Known
Information: George married his first wife, Lulu
Jessie Holcomb
, on
September 3, 1907, and had two children with her; Creston and
Evelyn. His second marriage was to Olive Justine 'Billy' Smith, on April 12,
1917. They had two daughters, June Elnora, and Peggy
Patricia and two sons, George Earl Miller Jr. and Sterling
Miller. He was a carpenter, and built many homes in the
Portland area. During World War One he worked at Boeing, where
we believe he worked on the aircraft interiors. George
& Billy were
very happy together. They lived in the NW Seattle,
Washington area, in a very modest one bedroom home, with a large
tree in the front yard, and lots of berries in the back yard to
pick. He had a large workshop in his garage, and
he always whistled while he worked. He played
piano "by ear", he never learned to read music, and played very
well. Billy was in the hospital for several weeks before
she died, but during that time George always anticipated that
she would come home. At the time, there was a song being
played on the radio called "Snow on the Roses"*.
This was a song that had actually been popular while they were
dating back around 1916-1917, so he was practicing it
on the piano to be able to play it for her when she came
home. Instead, his son George Earl Miller Jr. wrote out
the music (he was also a musician) and it was played by the
organist at her funeral. George died in 1971 of
colon cancer.

Brown(Markee) and Phoebe Gorgo Brown(Harrison) are alive and well
living in Oregon. I knew Nora Nell Brown and her
family until she passed in 2004. Just this past week I
attended Phoebe's 70th Wedding Anniversary and saw many of these
three sister's children. We treasure Phoebe and the values
she instilled in our family and remain very close to her and my
grandfather, also doing well. They had four children, 12
grandchildren and currently 23 great grandchildren and meet each
year in Bend during July for a large family gathering.
Phoebe is an avid gardener and she and my grandfather were both
