Guest Room

Here we've put in some furniture and stored some of Jayden's extra toys in our Guest Room.  It is now officially available for guests!

The dresser was given to us by Kass' Aunt Myrt Rinker from a boarding house her mother in law purchased in Portland, Oregon back in the late 1920's.  The bed was purchased new by Kass' paternal grandfather.

Finally finished, the Guest Room now sports a painted door, and the trim has been completed on the closet base.  We've decided on a closet organizer much like we had in the manufactured home, rather than an armoire or dresser.  Lower right a close up of the light fixture for the room.

On the weekend of April 12, 2008, Rick painted the floor in the Guest Room.

Over the weekend of March 30th, 2008, we finished the painting of all the molding trim, and even managed to sand the floor in the Guest Room.  Once we pick a color for the floor, we can paint it and this room will be just about done!

Still camera shy but Kass applies some wood hardener to a few damaged areas of the floor before painting.

On the weekend of March 7th, Rick finished up the base molding around the closet and swept off the floor in preparation of painting it.  We just need a 12' base board on the back wall and then we can prime the base molding and the floor all at once!  If you look carefully you can see the recessed light in the corner is on!  Once we finish the painting, restore the door, and get a plate to mount the center light fixture, the Guest Room will be completed!

Sunday January 6, 2008, Big Rick finished up the top of the closet area, and even lined the inside ceiling with cedar as well.  The front is all faced and ready for the molding and trim to cover it up, although we may paint the boards first.  Haven't really decided on that part just yet.

On 11-25-07 Rick framed in the closet and put in the cedar lining.  We've decided just to make this a hanging closet area, divided for a double bar on the left, and a single bar on the right.

After the second coat you can see the colors a little better. Next will be rebuilding the built-in dresser and armoire.

Alex selected a pastel pink and green color scheme for this room based off some bedding she picked out and ordered.  Kass & her sister in-law Janette Kirchhofer painted it on 09-16-07.

At the end of July 2007 Kass textured and primed the Guest Room.  We also tacked up the window molding and picture rail on two of the walls.  Once we pick out wall colors we can paint!

June 30th Rick finished the sheet rock in the room and Kass mudded the new areas while sanding the previously done areas.  Almost ready for texture and painting!

Above the chimney chute has been covered.

The built in armoire will go in the above area.

Father's Day weekend the Guest Room was mudded & sanded.  The closet area was left undone as the built in cabinet will be covering that section of the room, as well as the bottom 6 inches that will be covered by the floor molding as well.

On Saturday, June 3rd, Big Rick woke up early and started hanging the sheetrock in the Guest Room... ALL BY HIMSELF!  Let's just say those 12 foot sheets were a little tricky.  Luckily no one and nothing was hurt.  These pics were snapped just before that small strip along the bottom of the wall was finished.  The chimney chute will be left exposed until we get the stove pipe run.

Here you can see the walls have been completed and the mudding has begun.  A very dramatic change from the exposed walls of before.  Now it really 'feels' like a room.

Warmer already!
Little plumbing
                to do
Here we've begun insulating the exterior walls.  We are leaving the one area with plumbing undone until it passes inspection.  I could actually feel it being warmer in here already!

You lookin' at
                me?
Here's Kass' son Rick running wires for the electrical in the Guest Room on 9-10-2006.  He's wiring the entire 2nd floor for electric, telephone, TV and DSL.  A very handy guy!!!

Cleaning Yearning
Burning!

We hired Mitch who is known hereabouts as The Sashman.  No, he doesn't wear a cape, but he does wield a gun, a heat gun in this case, and with that and other tools he & his wife Gail lovingly restore old windows to a near original state!  We had them restore the two windows in the Guest Room as it's on the weather side of the house and in the most need of immediate repair.

After they were done, we could open them with one finger, when hours before you could hardly budge them with both hands!
New window in!
Slides so good!

Out with the
                old...
....in with the
                new!
New Wall and
                Flooring!
Over the Memorial Day weekend we removed the final remnants of the bearing wall between the Master Bedroom and the Guest Room, rebuilt the bearing wall, and replaced the damaged flooring.  Upper left Kass removes the last of the lathe and plaster, upper right the replaced flooring is in, left and right the newly built bearing wall with a space for the chimney to Kassandra's grandmother's wood cook stove.

Cabinet here-some
                assembly required.

No more cabinet

                repair
Doorway
                surrounding walls

Here you can see much of the Guest Room cleaned out.  The cabinet that was to the right of the door has been removed, and the remaining walls and ceiling removed as well.  The vent in the pictures to the left has since been removed as well.  In the upper right you can see the storage space accessable through the closet door in the Master Bedroom.

just a bit of
                dirty work
Jayden took this picture (our 4-year old son) of Kass removing the built in cabinet.  It was too far gone from water damage to save.

                cabinet & damage
Bedroom 3 close up damage
This bedroom has a built-in hutch with drawers.  Not sure if it will be repairable yet.
Damage from the leaking roof just above the cabinet.
Bedroom 3 chiney stove hole & water pipe
Bedroom 3
                built in cabinet
A look down where the old chimney vent went through the room.
Possibly some floor damage in here as well.  Appears sound and the window opens.
Bedroom 3 NE corner
                & ceiling
Minor cracks in the plaster, but still solid.
