| Long
overdue
for an update, the Back Porch has been primed and is ready
for it's final coat of paint! Kass found a large
window frame she thought would be perfect to hang in the
open area to cut down the wind, so she brought it home and
we put it up! |

with new trim work added. |
Kass' son Rick and her
dad Fred spent the afternoon building our back
stairs. They used pre-made stringers and some of
the same tongue and groove composite decking boards we
used for the floor of the back porch.
|
They just need a couple
of hand rails and some finishing touches.
So much better than
the ladder we have been using!

Something
was
wrong with the back door opening, and from Kass'
expression it needed to be fixed. So we put this
door in there. Well, almost. It still needs a
little tweaking, but it's close enough you get the
idea. We want to add some trim in the large panel to
match the other doors in the house. |

![]() With siding from Reclaimed
Millworks of Tualitan, OR, we finished
the railing of the back porch and had most of the trim
done. Just need to cut down some pieces to finish
it off. Oh yeah, maybe some stairs would be nice.

On her days off this
week, Kass framed in the railing on Wednesday February
8th. Using the salvaged railing as a guide, she
constructed the new railing from the Kitchen wall and
around the corner to the stairs opening.
|
| Later on Wednesday she started the
siding! Sure did make a mess on the floor! <G>
|
|
| On
Thursday February 9th Kass continued working on the siding
for the railing, finishing the inside completely and
'weaved' the replacement siding with the original
siding. A few minor trims it's all going together
pretty well! With Big Rick's table saw she was able to trim edges to fit the siding together neatly. The ends with out paint make it look like there are some holes in the railing. <G> Friday she plans to stop by a lumber store to pick out some wood to use for the top of the railing. |

On
February 5th, Big Rick & Kass managed to replace the
siding on the wall for the back porch. The siding
was purchased through Reclaimed
Millworks in Tualitan, OR. They
specialize in custom word working and the resale of old
woods such as the siding we purchased that used to be on a
home in Portland, OR. It's a very close match to the
original siding; as we put it up, it matched neatly with
the paint marks from the original siding that had been
there. We still have several long pieces we are
going to use for the railing. We plan on removing
some smaller pieces under the Kitchen window (above left)
so it ties in nicely. |

![]() On December 4th, Fred and
Big Rick laid out the decking and attached it to the
flooring. All that's left now is the railing and
the stairs and the Back Porch is done! (The door
is part of the Kitchen <G>)
|
| The
column in this picture is one of the original columns from
the front porch. We are recycling it here. It may look a
little short, but it is meant to sit on top of the
railing, when we get it built. |
The
open wall in the right of the picture is the wall that
separates the exterior of the house from the Laundry Room.
We need to find replacement siding to cover the wall,
sheet rock just isn't going to cut it any more. |
| Floor joists are in, plywood is down,
old walls are removed! We need to install the rubber
membrane, some "stringers" and the decking. Stairs
will eventually replace the ladder and a railing will be
installed along the west side (left in the picture) of the
back porch. <Scroll to the bottom to see the before pictures> |

| Clifford
gives
the jack hammer a try. It turned out to be a good
tool to have on hand for this project! |
"Well ,
we took the floor out, now how about that perimeter
wall? Have to make room for the house movers' beams
to get under there some how." |
| Fred
(Kass's dad) and Cliff (Rick's dad) check out the large
piece of concrete they were able to break out of the floor
in the back porch. The top slab broke out easy, but the
perimeter footings are proving to be quite the challenge. |
We had
to remove part of the wall to get the tractor in and be
able to scoop the massive quantity of rocks that were
hidden under the concrete slab. It's okay; the wall
is not original anyway and will be removed completely
after its on the new foundation. |
| The
original Kitchen door was here. We will put it back the
way it was, but enlarge it to 36" so we can get large
appliances and grocery loads in easily. |
Previous
owners
had walled in the back porch, but they did leave the
original ceiling intact. We plan on removing the
walls and recreating the open Back Porch with railing. |
